Basketball holds a unique place in the hearts and minds of the Barunga community. The basketball cup is regarded by some as the cup that community wants to win the most. The carnival attracts feverish and loud crowds in large numbers. Man on man tactics and lots of slam dunking ensures a magnificent spectacle and atmosphere. 

In the Barunga community, basketball outdates AFL. Prior to the rise of footy, basketball was unparalleled in its popularity. The courts at Barunga are continually in use with friends playing games that seem to elicit a similar level of passion and competitive spirit as the festival. The Jawoyn communities can boast players that have played in the NBL/WNBL.
