  Bush Medicine

BUSH MEDICINE

Bush Medicine refers to the traditional practice of collecting plant matter found in surrounding bush areas, and using it to treat common symptoms such as diorreah, vomiting, pain and colds.

Roots, bark, leaves and berries were often utilised to concoct a natural bush rememedy.

The remedy would usually be cooked up and applied by a 'bush doctor' or respected elder that was learned in bush medicine practices.

Barunga people are aware of the importance of bush tucker, and have even planted more bush tucker trees in the community, to have easy access to bush tucker. They see bush tucker as an important part of their diet, and important to stave off diabetes. Bush tucker is recommended by nutritionists.

There are several books which divulge many of the secrets of Bush Medicine and Bush Tucker of the Jawoyn, including Liz Thompson's Bush Medicine of the Jawoyn and the Jawoyn Plants and Animals book by Glenn Wightmann
