THE PEOPLE OF BARUNGA

By Maggie Jentian

Traditional owners of Barunga are of the Jawoyn Tribe they live amongst others tribes including the Dalabon, Miali, Rembarrnga, Ngalakan and Arente.

We all live together in this small community as one group, the Barunga Mob.

Everyone in the community uses one language that is Kriol or sometimes English is often spoken when in the present of Balanda or other visiting persons.

We have a school, an Outback Store, a Local Clinic and our council under the Roper Gulf Shire, our population is under 500.

There is little amount of housing so some families live with each other, for instance in our house there’s my mother, my young sister with her two kids, my other sisters three children, me and my partner plus my teenage son who goes to college in Darwin and its only a one bedroom house.
