SPORTIndigenous people thrive on sport. At the Festival you can see a range of exhibition matches from some of the most popular sports in the Northern Territory. FOOTBALLAs one of the most popular sports amongst the indigenous community, football plays an important part in community life. At the Barunga Festival you will see some of the best footballers from the region battle it out in the Northern Territory’s most prestigious sports festival – with the highest prize money in a community sporting carnival. In 2009, the winning football team will take home $2500 in cash. The runners up will take home $1000. Almost every weekend over the dry season, the Barunga team participates in the Katherine Region Football League – which is organized by AFL NT for more information, and the latest draw visit Sporting Pulse’s website Barunga plays as the Arnhem Crows. Long time Barunga resident, and Sport and Recreation Officer, Paul Amarant is the head coach. Paul Amarant does a great job managing the football team – and all the Barunga sports teams. It’s not only a full time job, it’s a lifestyle. Paul works every day of the week, organizing team training sessions, community discos, to full blown sporting festivals and carnivals, such as the NT Schoolboy’s Football carnival the week before the Barunga Festival, as well as a comprehensive women’s softball and basketball competition.
