BUSH TUCKER

Bush tucker refers to the tradtional foods that aboriginal people eat.

Bush tucker can consist of anything found naturally in the bush, from animals, fish, birds, to seeds, fruits and insects.

The traditional diet of the Jawoyn people was quite healthy and balanced. The foods found in Jawoyn country are high in vitamins, proteins and other nutrients and low in fats.

An Aboriginal person living on all bush tucker would be quite healthy and fit, owing to low levels of sugars, fats and having to walk some distance to gather and hunt for their meals.

Some of the favourite bush tucker of people living in Jawoyn country includes Barramundi, bush turkey (bustard) and the long necked turtle.

Collecting bush tucker is still largely a family activity enjoyed by young and old. Collecting bust tucker is a chance to get back out to country, tell stories, and share culture.

Aboriginal people would breastfeed their children until the child was 3 or 4 years old. This practice is still largely upheld by Aboriginal people living in the Northern Territory.
